When we last saw him he was sitting on his own in front of what looked like a banquet table laid out for a special dinner or celebration. He sat there with his arms folded and beaming smile, as we puzzled over what had happened to bring about this dramatic change in mood and demeanour since his emotional and lonely journey in the Eight of Cups. You see, from the very beginning in the Ace, he knew what it was he wanted. His Cup had overfloweth then and was enthusiastic about sharing it with all. He was loves young dream and I supposed held a very idealistic view of life, relationships and a rosy future. Why not I, and we all indulged his fantasies, for he was a sweet and gentle young thing who was peace loving, kind and considerate, if not a tad naive. While the Wands were out trail blazing, The Swords worried about everything and anything and The Pentacles building empires, The Cups just wanted to be happy. Not only did they want to be personally happy, they also wanted to share their happiness with everyone and especially a certain other. From the Ace, The Cups began to seek their Soul. Mate or Partner.   They had very good intentions but were probably a bit too hasty too soon. They had a tendency to fall in love too easily and wore their heart on their sleeves, so eager were they to express their emotions and feelings. Bless their little innocent hearts, for they were not prepared for the pain that would be inflicted upon it when their rosy bubbles of love and happy feelings burst. Because they were Cups, they felt all emotions on a very deep level and were easily scarred by harsh words or rough treatment. Highly sensitive to their atmosphere and environment, their moods could swing terribly low when balance and harmony were disturbed. It came as a shocking disappointment to them when they discovered not everyone shared their caring and considerate way of behaviour. People could sometimes be mean and deliberately nasty. They said things to hurt and often laughed in their face when they saw the tears that were quick to fall. Then there was the experience of the most terrible blow of all, betrayal by those they loved and trusted. The dagger like pain of rejection and separation when love turned sour. The disbelief,  anger and dreadful disappointment. And then of course for some, there was the worst separation of all. The total loss of a loved one through bereavement. The shock, pain, loss and loneliness endured seemed unbearable. With their lovely world turned up side down in the Four and Five of Cups, they wallowed for some time in their misery and mourning. Overwrought with turbulent emotions they struggled to understand what had happened, what had gone wrong and why They had a choice to drown in the sea of their trauma and sadness or swim to shore and save themselves. The Cups chose life and once they did, they discovered their hearts were still beating, and not as they thought, grown cold as stone. There was a pulse, and a steady, if not fragile rhythm. They had something to work with, they could mend their heart and emotions. All was not lost but it was vitally important for the Cups to protect their heart, feelings and emotions from unnecessary further damage. They had to toughen up but not get hard, for they liked being able to feel and respond. They just had to be a little bit more sensible and realistic about life, and not take everything so personally. With their heart on the mend, they felt the first stirrings of the need of love, but this time the feeling was different. They understood the stirrings were the inner calling for love and acceptance of the self first, before that love could be transferred to another.
